PS5’s latest AI upscaling tech, QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution), could hit a roadblock in games built on older SDKs.
For those unaware, PlayStation announced that, thanks to their collaboration with AMD on Project Amethyst, they were able to come up with a “quick new evolution of PSSR“, in the form of QSSR, which helps provide higher fidelity and better frame rates on PS5. However, it seems it might not be possible for games released on the current-gen console.
QSSR Might Need Devs to Make Their PS5 Games Run on Newer SDKs, “Which Could be a Problem”
In one of their latest YouTube uploads, Digital Foundry hosted a Q&A where they discussed which third-party games can take advantage of PS5’s new QSSR tech. The hosts spoke about games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Control Resonant, 007 First Light, Crimson Desert, and Alan Wake 2, which could benefit a lot from QSSR.
The host then goes on to speak about the status of QSSR within the SDK framework and that it would be able to run on older versions of the SDK. If that’s not the case, then the developers will have to update their games to run on the newer SDKs, and Richard Leadbetter recently heard that this could be a problem for some of the older titles.
Leadbetter discusses that provisions had been made for PSSR, which enabled it to run on games built on older SDKs. He adds that QSSR can’t have a system-level toggle, since it lacks the “centralized library” PSSR had to support that upgrade.
