Halo: Combat Evolved on PS5 will require a Microsoft account and XBOX Gamertag, the developers confirm.
As the Halo series prepares to come to PlayStation for the first time ever, the developers have confirmed what PS5 players will need to play the upcoming remaster of the original Halo campaign. The news comes from a new Q&A on the Halo Waypoint website.
Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5 Requires a Microsoft Account and XBOX Gamertag
In the June Q&A, the developers confirmed that regardless of which platform players choose, they will need a Microsoft account and an Xbox Gamertag to link to either PlayStation or Steam. This will enable cross-platform play and progression. Also, some specific details were noted in the blog that you can read below:
Yes, just as you do today for Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite to ensure smooth cross-platform progression, to play Halo: Campaign Evolved you will need a Microsoft account and XBOX Gamertag, regardless of the platform(s) you play on. This enables both cross-platform play and cross-platform progression. A few additional items to keep in mind for launch day include:
- XBOX Series X|S: If you’re playing split-screen on an XBOX console, the second player will also need a unique Microsoft account. If you want to play online co-op, you will need an active XBOX Game Pass subscription.
- PlayStation 5®: If you’re playing split-screen on PlayStation 5®, both accounts will need to have PlayStation Plus and be linked to a Microsoft account. Having these active PlayStation Plus subscriptions will also provide access to online co-op play.
- Steam: If you’re playing via Steam, you will need to link to a Microsoft account.
- If you’d like to jump in immediately on July 28, we recommend having an XBOX account created beforehand to help save time once you put the disc in the tray.
Pre-orders for Halo: Campaign Evolved went live on June 7. The game is slated to release on July 28. This will be the first time that the signature XBOX shooter comes to PlayStation. This game was announced for the Sony platform before XBOX reevaluated its approach to exclusive games. Moving forward, certain games, such as Gears of War: E-Day, will be exclusive to XBOX consoles.
Insider Gaming will continue to monitor all things Halo and report on all updates. How do you feel about needing a Gamertag to play a game on PlayStation 5? Sound off about this story and all others in our official Discord server.
