Pokémon likes to provide a variety of ways to unlock Evolutions in the franchise, which remains the case in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and the Metal Coat is required for two particular Evolutions.
Unlike Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which had no online features and allowed you to evolve Pokémon with specific items, Pokémon Legends: Z-A brings the trading mechanic back to the fold—and the two Pokémon requiring Metal Coats, Scizor and Steelix, cannot be found in the wild.
If you’re looking to add these Pokémon to your collection and need to get your hands on a Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, we’ve got all the details you need.
Where to Find Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Two Side Missions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A provide a Metal Coat among the rewards for completing them, which gives you the earliest access to the Metal Coat.
Both Side Mission 101: Steadfast as Steel and Side Mission 114: A Feather From Skarmory award a Metal Coat for completion, although both only appear very late in the game. In fact, you may have to wait until the post-game to encounter the Skarmory-themed side quest, so focus on Steadfast as Steel inside.
This Side Mission first appears during Main Mission 35, based on our saved data. You can find the NPC for the Side Mission on Bleu Street, found in the southern portion of the map between Bleu Sector 7 and Bleu Sector 5. There’s a Pokémon Center nearby to fast travel to, or you can head there from Wild Zone 16 and Wild Zone 12.
To complete the side quest, defeat the trainer and their Steel-type Pokémon: Excadrill, Steelix, Mawile, and Scizor. Fire-type Pokémon are your best bet here, as they can quickly take down all four Pokémon.
Where to Buy Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Metal Coats are available to purchase in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but only once you have completed the main story and advanced into the post-game content.
To purchase a Metal Coat, head to Racine Construction and progress through the office to the back area where you fought Canari. Interact with the Racine Construction worker in this location to gain access to a host of items that are available to purchase, including Metal Coat.
Each Metal Coat will cost $4980, but there is an unlimited amount through this method. So, if you get your hands on a Shiny Scyther or Shiny Steelix and want to evolve it, you’ll always have that option available.
