Sony has provided a new update on the development of the PlayStation 6, confirming that work on its next-generation console is “progressing as scheduled.” This comes as the PlayStation 5 continues to sell well, with the console now nearing the monumental 100 million units sold milestone.
With the next generation of PlayStation hardware on the horizon, Sony is seemingly beginning to shift its attention towards the future, although the PS5 still has plenty of life left in it.
PS6 Development Is “Progressing As Scheduled”

The latest information comes directly from Sony’s financial results, published on Thursday, November 5. While the webcast is yet to become available, VGC captured several quotes from the live report, including Sony CFO Lin Tao confirming that PlayStation 6 development is “progressing as scheduled.” The company is also looking to make “solid progress” on its next-generation platform throughout the next fiscal year.
This next financial year begins in April 2027, meaning Sony is expected to ramp up its preparations for the next console over the coming months. However, the company has yet to provide an official release date for the PlayStation 6, so you’ll have to wait a little longer before learning when the hardware will arrive—though many think it won’t be until 2028 at the earliest.
Numerous patents have emerged potentially referencing the PS6, such as an evolution of haptic feedback, as well as the console reportedly costing $200 less to develop than the next iteration of XBOX.
PS5 Sales Reach 97.9 Million
Alongside the PlayStation 6 update, Sony also revealed that the PlayStation 5 has now sold 97.9 million units worldwide. A further 2.6 million consoles were shipped during the three months ending September 30, 2026, putting the system within touching distance of 100 million sales.
While hardware sales are gradually declining, as expected at this stage of the console’s lifecycle, Sony has stated that the PlayStation platform continues to expand and grow steadily.
Sony has additionally confirmed that it has secured enough memory components for its next fiscal year. This will allow the company to continue making progress towards its next-generation platform, despite rising memory costs across the industry.
