Paramount’s purchase of Warner Bros. has taken a major step forward. On Monday, it was reported that Paramount has settled the antitrust lawsuits brought against it by 12 states.
The lawsuit appeared to be the final major hurdle in the company’s acquisition of Warner Bros.
The Largest Media Merger In History Moves Forward
First reported by Bloomberg, the outlet says that settlement talks between Paramount and the attorneys general “came to fruition over the weekend after four states that had opposed terms of a deal outlined with California conceded”.
Those four states were New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Minnesota.
It’s said that the settlement, which should be announced sometime on Monday, sees Paramount agree to a number of protections. Some of the protections include a commitment to spend an addtiion $1.5 billion on film production in California. In addition to the film commitment, there will be a board of independent journalists assigned to oversee the integrity of news organizations like CNN and CBS News.
Finally, there will reportedly be a financial penalty should Paramount fail to distribute at least 30 movies a year in theaters.
With Paramount acquiring Warner Bros., that would also include Warner Bros. Games and its franchises like Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter, Batman, DC Comics, and more. There’s been no word on what this deal, when it goes through, will mean for the studios under Warner Bros., such as NetherRealm, Rocksteady, TT Games, and Avalanche Software, among others.
Paramount has already started dipping into the games industry with the announcement of its new studio—Paramount Games Studio—and the first game under the umbrella, TMNT: The Last Ronin.
When it closes, Paramount will acquire Warner Bros. for roughly $111 billion.
