Nintendo says new ways to play remain a high priority, with hardware and software teams experimenting on Switch 2 before announcing ideas.
Since entering the video game industry, Nintendo has been synonymous with innovation. The original Nintendo Entertainment System controller made the D-pad a standard. Decades later, the Nintendo Wii led the motion-control trend.
Even now, the Nintendo Switch has helped handheld consoles move beyond being their own market, as in the days of the Nintendo Game Boy, to playing the same kinds of games as a stationary console.
Nintendo Says New Ways to Play Remain a High Priority

During a Q&A (auto-translated) following Nintendo’s second-quarter financial results for the fiscal year ending in 2027, several executives emphasized that Nintendo continues to put innovation at the forefront of its games.
Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. in Japan, said that providing uniquely Nintendo experiences is the lifeblood of the brand, and while how they present entertainment may change over the years, that will never change.
In the future, we may provide unique entertainment in forms different from those we offer today. At present, however, we believe that integrated hardware and software entertainment is where we can make the most of our strengths.
Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo’s senior managing executive officer, also said the hardware and software teams are experimenting with new ways to play on the Switch 2 and hope to announce new games that take advantage of those capabilities soon.
Our fundamental approach is not to use a new feature merely for its own sake. Instead, we first think of an enjoyable way to play, then consider what new hardware features are needed to make it possible, and make the fullest use of those features.
We are also engaging in repeated experimentation to realize new ways to play on Nintendo Switch 2, so we hope you look forward to the day when we can announce them.
