Nintendo Planned Star Fox & Yoshi Games Because of Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that new game releases centred around Fox McCloud and Yoshi were planned because of the pair’s appearance in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Star Fox, a remake of the Nintendo 64 title, was released last month, while Yoshi and the Mysterious Book was released in May, with both landing soon after the release of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Miyamoto has revealed that it wasn’t a coincidence, and it seems likely that future plans will also be impacted by the movie schedule.

Star Fox & Yoshi Games Came Because of Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Speaking to Japanese magazine Famitsu, via Nintendo Everything, Miyamoto revealed that plans were made for games around both characters to coincide with the release of the movie.

“I don’t decide everything about the lineup, but we did discuss that we have an idea to include Fox in the script for the movie, so we definitely want a new Star Fox game,” he said.

“Sometimes things get decided after we’ve discussed them. We started working on the first Mario movie and Princess Peach Showtime around the same time, and we talked about things like ‘if we have this game, shouldn’t Peach be more energetic in the movie too?’

“It was decided early on that Yoshi would appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, so we decided to make a Yoshi game, and that’s how development of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book began.

“It’s a case-by-case situation, but I think we’ll continue to maintain a good relationship between games and other developments.”

The strategy is certainly one that makes sense, allowing fans to experience the character on the big screen, then delving into a game focused on those characters.

Nintendo is delving further into major film releases in the future, with a live-action Legend of Zelda title set to release in April 2027.
