It has been claimed that Twitch is in the midst of testing a new feature that I’ve been after for the longest time. In an attempt to bring the platform in line with YouTube and Kick.com, Twitch seems to be testing live rewind. It strikes me as bizarre that it has taken this long, especially as the platform is the leading site for live esports, but here we are.
This could be a game-changer, especially as YouTube frequently lobbies for exclusive broadcast rights for some esports tournaments, and features like a live rewind feature are huge in that setting.
We’ll Do It Live!
In the iconic words of Bill O’Reilly: ‘F*** it, we’ll do it live!’
On social media, streaming know-all Zach Bussey suggested that Twitch is testing live rewind as the next major feature to hit the platform. The timing is nothing short of stellar, given that TwitchCon Rotterdam is set to kick off in just a couple of weeks.
Twitch appears to be testing Live Rewind. Sources suggest it might be announced at Twitchcon Rotterdam 2025.
If true, this could be huge. If you want to rewind a Twitch stream now, you need to dig out the VOD (assuming they’re being captured), wait a few minutes, then scroll back through the content to find the point you’re eager to see.
On YouTube, live rewind means that you can just scoot back a little, watch whatever you wanted to see, then return to the present point.
As I’ve mentioned, this is of particular interest for esports fans, as it means they can rewatch a killer play within a matter of seconds rather than in a few minutes, disrupting the flow of play immeasurably.
It was recently suggested that the Call of Duty League might return to Twitch next season, which makes me very happy to hear it could do so alongside live rewind.
