Everyone is wondering what the PS6 can do to show everyone it’s worth shelling out a ton of money on, and why the PlayStation 5 could be considered obsolete at some point. A new patent hints at a significant improvement for the PS6.
Any new Sony patent sighting potentially gives us a window into the future. From the PS1 to PS4 (and PS5, to an extent), we saw generational leaps and advances in tech, but it feels like we’ve plateaued.
Further improvements feel incremental, and this latest Sony patent leans into this for the PS6.
PS6 to Feature Improved Cooling System to Prevent Overheating?

Earlier this year, it was discovered that Sony was working on a PlayStation patent that could address loading screen boredom.
This isn’t a monumental change, but upgrading a key part of the PS6’s framework is. Details of a new patent (discovered by Tech4Gamers) went live in June 2026, and its core functionality is to ‘improve cooling capacity.’

One of the biggest issues worldwide with the PS5 has been overheating. It’s not affected all models, but there have been countless instances of PS5 consoles getting a bit too crispy.
Here’s a quick outline of the patent:
‘An electronic device is provided that can improve cooling capacity of a heating element built into an electronic device disposed in a plurality of postures. A heat pipe (50) includes a heat dissipation portion (51) connected to a heat sink (61, 62) and an outer surface (53) in contact with a heat transfer member (70), and includes a pipe lower portion (52) positioned below the heat transfer member (51) and extending in a direction intersecting the vertical direction when a device body (11) is in a vertical posture. The pipe lower portion (52) includes an extension portion (55) extending outside an outer edge of the heat transfer member (70).’
The patent also includes drawings related to the patent, but they look like the PS5, and are likely being used as example images.

The takeaways are that it should improve cooling, whether the presumed PS6 is standing or horizontal, but this is only a patent, and isn’t a guarantee that it will work.

They’re also “fixing” the “issue” that allows you to play physical games on it.
How about more memory.
Funny how we will for sure not get any extra memory… yet every game will have to be downloaded to that TB SSD
Ah yes. The problem that we don’t have. The issue of over heating is not due to the console. It is due to people putting them in tiny spaces with little to no air flow and wonder why it over heats.
Thanks but I like my games physical. Buying PS6 would be useless. How much “improvement” would they even be able to make while the 5 works great? If you don’t want your console to overheat, don’t put it in a cramped space and give it ample room to vent.
If the alleged problem isn’t ownership of our purchases, then i dont care
I have every PlayStation ever made, but unless they go back to physical discs I won’t be buying one.
