Recent sales data indicate that some PlayStation 5 games on PC are increasingly losing their audience share. This research follows the report that PlayStation is moving away from porting its first-party PlayStation 5 titles to PC.
Sony has been transferring several of its console exclusives to the PlayStation platform, including titles like Horizon Zero Dawn and the Spider-Man games. However, in early 2025, reports indicated that Sony plans to move away from this practice. Recent data from Newzoo (via GamesIndustry.Biz) shows that, on average, 13% of players for PS4 and PS5 titles are from the PC market when these games are ported.
“Newzoo’s data shows that PlayStation titles ported to PC after their console launch typically see PC account for around 13% of total players in the first three months across both releases,” says Manu Rosier, Director of Market Intelligence at Newzoo. “By comparison, when comparable AAA titles launch simultaneously on PC and console, PC contributes closer to 44% of players in the same period.”
Release Timing Significantly Impacts Players’ Choosing to Purchase PC Ports of PlayStation Games
It’s further noted that the choice to release games on PC much later, in some cases years later, than on PlayStation significantly impacts players’ decisions to pick up a game on PC. It’s noted that only 5% of players of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are on PC. That number is down from the 14% of the first Spider-Man release.
“The key takeaway is that release timing has a significant impact on PC engagement. When a PC version arrives years after the console launch, much of the early lifecycle demand has already been captured on the primary platform,” said Rosier.
