New Final Fantasy Remakes Would Require ‘4 or 5’ Games, Says Square Enix Director

So many diehard FF fans are desperate to see Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8, and 9 get the full remake treatment next. It’s not that simple, not according to Square Enix director and producer Naoki Yoshida, who thinks the remake would require more work than you think.

A Final Fantasy 6 remake has been outed, as has an FF9 remake. Once Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is out, this will complete the remake trilogy of games. Alongside trying to make Final Fantasy 17, Square Enix will have plenty of room to work on a new FF remake.

Final Fantasy 6 is an ‘Incredibly Huge Game’

Through @Genki_JPN, we’ve learned what Square possibly thinks about the idea of remaking other older Final Fantasy games, and why it might not be feasible, especially if they’re approached similarly to the FF7 remake trilogy.

Yoshi-P, AKA Naoki Yoshida, director and producer for Final Fantasy 14 and other FF media and Square franchises (including Dragon Quest), opened up on a new remake.

Here’s what he said:

“Of course I understand the feelings of the players, but you gotta think about it. Look at Final Fantasy VI, it’s such an incredibly huge game. The scale is just immense. And the same applies for other titles like Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX. So of course now because you are working on the Final Fantasy VII series. I do get that people would be asking for Remakes of other titles. But if we did remake those other titles. We’d probably have to release them in 4 instalments or even 5 instalments.”

One of the criticisms of the FF7 trilogy is how long the whole thing has taken.

Don’t forget, the original remake was first announced in 2015, meaning it will have taken 12 years to reimagine the whole game!

From what Yoshida is saying, a new remake could require even more games, which could potentially mean just as much time to tell the whole story—if not more.
