Final Fantasy 9 Remake ‘On Ice,’ It’s Claimed

The latest on Square Enix potentially remaking Final Fantasy 9. It’s not great news for those who were hoping to play the remake in the near future.

Final Fantasy 7’s remakes have breathed new life into the classic Sony PlayStation title. The remakes have been turned into a trilogy and even changed plot details for that title. Recently, notable leaker NateTheHate offered the latest information he’d heard about the ninth entry in the classic JRPG franchise potentially getting the remake treatment.

Final Fantasy 9 Remake Currently Not Moving Forward

On his podcast, NateTheHate revealed that the FF9 remake was still “on ice” at Square Enix. However, he does say the studio could always return to the project in the future.

“So, the last update I had on it was that the game is still on ice. Now, on ice with Square Enix could mean they may return to it one day, but as far as I’ve heard, there’s been no new movement with it. Hopefully, one day Square Enix returns to it, and we may see a Final Fantasy 9 remake come to light.”

There you have it. Final Fantasy 9 being remade seems far from completion. For those interested, the original game is currently playable on Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.

Elsewhere on his podcast, NateTheHate shared a lot of information on the future of Nintendo. For example, a new Star Fox game, the first since Wii U, appears to be right around the corner. Learn more here.
