Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has been announced, and with it comes the reveal of the first multiplayer features. This year, Infinity Ward is promising a more grounded, competitive, and precise experience centered around player control and authentic gunplay.
Leading the changes is a brand-new system called “Ballistic Authority,” which Infinity Ward describes as a weapon-first technology stack designed to create the “most authentic Modern Warfare gunplay yet.” The system combines precision aiming, physical weapon handling, realistic audio propagation, improved visibility, and combat perception into a single tuned combat model.
Infinity Ward says the goal is simple: “no bloom, no guesswork, and no doubt.”
One of the biggest gameplay changes is the complete removal of weapon bloom from hipfire. Instead of randomized spread affecting shots, gunfire will now feel directly connected to where players are aiming, creating more predictable and consistent engagements.
Movement has also been redesigned to feel more grounded while still allowing fluid transitions and faster decision-making during firefights. According to Infinity Ward, the updated system gives players more ways to reposition, challenge angles, and adapt under pressure without sacrificing control.
At launch, Modern Warfare 4 will include 12 brand-new core 6v6 multiplayer maps set across locations around the world. The maps are designed to support a variety of playstyles, ranging from close-quarters combat to larger open engagements.

Outside traditional multiplayer, the game will also include dedicated Gunfight maps, large-scale Big War battles featuring infantry and vehicles, and a new mode called Kill Block. Infinity Ward describes Kill Block as a dynamic battleground with more than 500 configurations capable of changing routes, cover placement, and sightlines between rounds.
Customization is also receiving a major overhaul. A new “Gunny” system acts as an in-game weapon advisor, helping players quickly build loadouts tailored to their preferred playstyle and unlocked attachments. You’ll also be able to share weapon builds with other players.
The Gunsmith system is expanding as well, alongside a unified loadout system and more weapons, killstreaks, and equipment available at launch.
Meanwhile, players who fully level weapons will gain access to “Apex Attachments,” which add new behaviors and tactical functions to guns after reaching max progression.
Infinity Ward is also bringing back Classic Prestige while introducing a second progression option called Regular Prestige. Classic Prestige will function similarly to older Call of Duty titles, resetting Create-a-Class progression in exchange for faster XP gains and exclusive rewards.
The multiplayer reveal appears to signal a major shift toward competitive consistency and player control, while also bringing back several progression systems longtime fans have requested for years.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
