It’s no secret how frustrating the Black Ops 7 campaign was, with the game requiring an always-online internet connection to play what should be an offline campaign. Modern Warfare 4 will feature numerous improvements over its predecessors, including an offline campaign, as mentioned earlier.
We were barely days into 2025’s new Call of Duty title when I had to declare that you can’t pause the Black Ops 7 campaign, ever.
There was no workaround, no special solution; you had to deal with it. Modern Warfare 4 doesn’t have this issue.
No Online-Only Campaign for Modern Warfare 4

In Black Ops 7, you could progress through a mission and clear a hideous gauntlet of enemies, and if you didn’t reach a checkpoint, there was every chance you would lose your connection, and the game kicked you out—meaning you’d have to start over.
It’s also the case when using the pause feature, too. You could hit pause, see the pause screen menu, but the game still carries on, and you could die.
Here’s an example of it in Black Ops 7.
This is a series known for its offline campaigns, and you simply shouldn’t have to have a constant online connection.
We learned that Modern Warfare 4’s campaign will let you play offline, and you won’t have bizarre circumstances, such as other players around the world talking in your lobby while you’re trying to watch a story cutscene!
It does seem like Infinity Ward is listening and trying to rectify some of the errors from recent CoD games. Do you think this is a great aspect of MW4 that needs addressing?
