Marathon’s Toughest Map (So Far) Only Has a 35% Survival Rate

Bungie has unveiled a slew of stats for Marathon’s recent server slam, the global test held ahead of the game’s full launch on March 5. In a short video posted on social media, various facts and figures were revealed, including a tidbit stating that almost one million runs were carried out using a ‘Rook’, the ‘basic’ Runner Shell in Marathon with no strings attached.

One of the most interesting facts concerned Dire Marsh, the toughest map in the server slam, which was a little more threatening than Perimeter, the ‘entry-level’ map. It was revealed that Dire Marsh boasted a shocking survival rate of just 35.6%, which means that 64% of all players who entered the Marsh never came out again.

You Win Some, You Lose Some… And Then You Lose Some More

When the server slam kicked off, hundreds of thousands of prospective Marathon fans found themselves diving into Perimeter, the introductory map that served as little more than a glorified tutorial ground.

Things escalated when those same users headed to Dire Marsh, which, as the name suggests, is a little trickier to manage.

The proof of that concept is in the numbers, revealed earlier today by Bungie in a social video. It was confirmed that the exfil rate on Dire Marsh was just 35.6%, and it’s easy to see that it is not the most complex, threatening map yet to surface in Marathon. There are more maps on the way, set to arrive both with and just after release.

Many ventured into Marathon with the hope that it would be an easier extraction shooter. It boasts a more accessible model, offering arcade-style gunplay and a range of classes, all with powerful abilities, but that hasn’t made for an easy ride for some. It’s going to get harder, too – Dire Marsh gets a night mode with the game’s second season.

The numbers posted in the video also revealed that more than 9.1 million Runners were killed by other players, while 129 million UESC enemies (the AI folks) were gunned down by that same player base.

And, in case you were wondering, 384,866 drinkable cheeseburgers were extracted from raids and taken back to stashes across the game.
