Dataminers have allegedly discovered a major change that is potentially coming to League of Legends next year.
The League Next project is rebuilding LoL from the ground up, with a new client and large systemic changes.
However, details on the major update are sparse, with an announcement expected sometime between the MSI 2026 and LoL Worlds 2026 esports tournaments.
Now, it appears that Riot is experimenting with allowing players to choose three roles to queue up for.
LoL dataminer LoLLeaksEN revealed code that suggests Riot will eventually allow a third position, “tertiary,” to be picked during role selection.
What Does This Change Mean for LoL players?
Giving players the choice of three roles should significantly speed up wait times for getting into matches, particularly at higher ranks.
League Next fixing LoL’s broken client and making major improvements to the game’s backend would certainly make this more complex queueing system possible.
However, it could also highly affect the quality of ranked matches, with many players typically struggling on their secondary roles, let alone their third-choice.
Though it could be argued that it would prevent more instances of players being autofilled into a role that they didn’t choose if queue times are too high.
Riot tried to address issues with autofilling for the 2026 ranked season, making it so that the system would first try to match an autofilled player against another autofilled player in the same role.
Riot also introduced the Aegis of Valor system, which rewards players with either double LP or full protection from LP loss on an autofilled game if they receive a mastery score of C or higher.
These changes were potentially brought in to make the release of this third role option smoother for League Next.
League Next will also overhaul the support role according to Riot Games’ senior vice president Andrei ‘Meddler’ van Roon.
