A new PlayStation 5 console jailbreak was released for PS5 & PS5 Pro, and it wasn’t the first example of it, but the latest, showing that not only is PS5 jailbreaking happening, but it’s developing and becoming more widespread…but is it above board?

You can currently jailbreak your PS5, allowing you to download pretty much most games on PlayStation for free, including DLC, and not only that, but you can even play PC games AND install Windows.

The PS5 jailbreak solution makes it so that PS2 discs are playable on the current-gen console. Through the ‘Overdrive’ jailbreak, you can do almost everything—I’ve seen it described as ‘easier than PC piracy.’
Basically, the PS5 jailbreak app ‘Overdrive’ seemingly makes games and DLC free. Sony keeps releasing new system software updates to try and combat jailbreaking, but people keep finding ways around it.
For now, jailbreak still works for PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro.

According to US Law Explained:
‘Thanks to specific exemptions in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act DMCA, jailbreaking your smartphone, tablet, or smart TV is generally not illegal in the United States. However, this legal protection does not extend to pirating apps or copyrighted content.
While you may not face legal trouble, jailbreaking almost certainly violates your device’s End-User License Agreement Eula and will void your warranty. If your device breaks after you jailbreak it, the manufacturer has no obligation to repair or replace it.
The legal green light for jailbreaking does not apply to all devices. The law is far stricter for gaming consoles like the PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch, where jailbreaking can lead to serious legal consequences, especially if it’s done to play pirated games.
Whereas SmartTechSavvy says for UK residents:
‘The legality of jailbreaking in the UK is a complex issue. In 2010, the UK government introduced the Digital Economy Act, which aimed to tackle online piracy and copyright infringement. Section 296ZE of the Act makes it an offense to circumvent technological protection measures (TPMs) without the permission of the copyright owner. However, the Act does not explicitly mention jailbreaking.
In 2012, the UK government issued a statement clarifying the law on jailbreaking. The statement confirmed that jailbreaking for personal use is not considered an offense under the Digital Economy Act. However, the statement also warned that jailbreaking could potentially infringe on copyright laws if it involves the installation of pirated software or apps.’
Take all of this into consideration.
What Happens if I Get Caught For Jailbreaking?
Sony can permanently ban your PlayStation account if you’re deemed guilty of jailbreaking your PS5, which means you can’t play online, and jailbreaking means you might eventually lose access to new updates and console features.
