Incredible Uncharted 4 Documentary Reveals Huge Gameplay & Story Differences in Amy Hennig Version

The Uncharted 4 we got is one of the best games of all time and is, quite frankly, incredible. However, we very nearly didn’t get this version of Uncharted 4, and now the biggest drop of details ever has been revealed about Amy Hennig’s version of the game through an eye-opening documentary.

I brought to you the big story that Naughty Dog almost shut down Uncharted 4 because it ‘sucked.’ It was a startling revelation, and it’s amazing to think we nearly got a different game, or no game at all!

Get ready for the biggest deep dive on the ‘other’ Uncharted 4 yet.

Amy Hennig’s Uncharted 4 Was Quite Different

First of all, huge credit needs to go to Thekempy for the video. The 1:27:50-minute-long Uncharted 4 documentary chronicles everything about Uncharted 4—pre and post-Hennig’s influence.

They asked a simple question: ‘What was Amy Hennig’s version of Uncharted 4?’

Now, I’m obviously not going to go into everything, as this would be one of the longest articles in existence, but throughout the duration of the video, we see a ton of behind-the-scenes development on the game, mo-capping, cut content, and so much more.

But here are some fun details about Amy Hennig’s Uncharted 4:

  • There are many levels that never made it into the game.
  • Alternate story beats
  • Rafe was going to be played by Alan Tudyk, not Warren Kole.
  • Sam Drake was originally going to be played by Todd Stashwick, not Troy Baker.
  • Also, Sam was going to be more of a ‘villain’ character, although he still displayed some of those traits in the full game.
  • Uncharted 3’s cockey Charlie Cutter was supposed to return in Uncharted 4, but the revised game scrapped this.
  • The cut content included new gameplay mechanics.
  • There was no playable orphanage section in the game (is that a good or bad thing?)
  • 5:50 in shows early development footage of ‘Reef,’ where Nathan Drake isn’t doing normal work for a company in a regular day job, you’re hunting, with Elena and Sully, underwater, looking for the wreck of Henry Avery’s ship.

If you have the time, I encourage you to watch the whole thing. Even if you’re not interested in Uncharted 4 or the franchise in general, it’s an absorbing watch and shows how different Uncharted 4 could have been.

Here’s the full ‘Uncovering Amy Hennig’s Uncharted 4’ video.

Let us know if you ended up watching the whole thing, and what you learned, and head on over to the Insider Gaming Discord to share your favorite changes from the OG version of Uncharted 4.
