How To Get a Secret Free Shift Code in Borderlands 4—Exclusive Golden Key, Explained

Borderlands 4 brings back the ever-reliable Shift Codes to score free loot, and a special Golden Key can be earned for simply playing and enjoying Borderlands 4.

If you didn’t know, you can play Borderlands 4 early using the trusty New Zealand trick. That means you can be playing Borderlands 4 right now, and beginning what should be a long and memorable journey. The launch marketing has been unreal, and there’s real hope for this to be an all-timer!

As usual, you’re going to loot, shoot, and loot some more. If you want better loot, you need Shift Codes to get Golden Keys, and Borderlands 4 offers a special way to get a free Shift Code.

You can earn a free Shift Code in Borderlands 4 once you finish the game.

We’ve blurred out the code above, but rest assured that’s a full-length Shift Code used to redeem a Golden Key. We didn’t say it would be the quickest method in the world to secure a Shift Key—but it is a free one!

But yes, once you finish Borderlands 4 for the first time, you’re rewarded with a Shift Code.

We can’t confirm if you get one every time you beat the game, which would be a lot of work just for a second key. Regardless, once you beat the main story, chances are you might have more content to mop up anyway, and the inevitable New Game Plus playthrough to take on.

What Do Shift Codes Do in Borderlands 4?

Shift Codes need to be redeemed to secure a Golden Key in Borderlands 4—and these are consumable items which reward you with super-special weapons and goodies.

Borderlands is known for its ‘Golden Chest’, which can only be opened with Golden Keys. You can go back to Borderlands 2 and the Golden Chest sitting in the middle of the town. It was a cool feeling when you had Golden Keys to waste on new loot.

Borderlands 4 retains this system, and you can presumably redeem Shift Codes through the in-game Social feature—just like in previous Borderlands games.

We’re going to do our best to keep on top of any further Shift Codes in Bordrlands 4. The more the merrier. Let us know if you locate any hidden or free Shift Codes for more Golden Keys in the comments below, and through the Insider Gaming forum.

Check out the game’s full game and file sizes, its talented voice cast and all major voice actors, and how to earn Twitch Drops for a bunch of other Borderlands 4 content to read.
