Horizon Composer Says AI in Gaming Is Both ‘Cool’ and ‘Insane’

The composer who worked on Horizon: Zero Dawn is sharing his personal thoughts on the pros and cons of AI in game development. For the most part, players tend to dislike the use of Generative AI in game development. However, studio executives continue to praise its ability to improve the development process.

Now, the composer of the Horizon games on PlayStation, Joris de Man, is offering his take on the technology. His is a balanced opinion, admitting that part of him thinks the technology is cool, while the artist in him knows it’s absolutely insane to try to replace creatives.

Horizon Composer Explains Why AI Can’t Replace Human Creativity

Speaking with EDGE Magazine, de Man admitted that he used older machine learning technology while working on Gotham Knights several years ago. He believes that there is a level of usefulness when, like with any tool, artists infuse the technology with their own creativity. However, he says the recent push to completely use AI-generated music in video games misses the point of creative endeavors entirely.

“The nerdy side of me goes: ‘Oh, wow, this is quite cool,” he said (h/t: FRVR). “But the more creative and artistic side of me goes: ‘This is f***ing insane’… People are infusing it with their own level of creativity, as musicians and as people, and it becomes something that you couldn’t have necessarily expected before, even though you’ve planned it all out. The incidental and the happy accidents are all things that happen.”

The topic of AI in gaming continues to be widely discussed. A former EA executive recently stated that the technology will not save developers from making a poor game if the bones of a good team and a good idea are not there. Read more about that here.
