Project Ekur flipped and flopped more than a fish out of water. At first, people thought Halo’s Project Ekur was a traditional, standalone multiplayer title. Then there was talk of a battle royale, and then an extraction shooter. A new report claims to have the full explanation.
After a long time of behind-the-scenes work and planning, Halo’s Project Ekur was canceled in July 2026.
While Halo: Campaign Evolved is available, the community will have to wait a little longer for a new Halo game, and it won’t be Project Ekur.
Project Ekur Went From Battle Royale to Extraction Shooter to BR to Canceled
Rebs Gaming has been known for its Halo reporting in recent months, accurately covering Halo: Campaign Evolved’s prequel missions, newer content being used in the game, and also being the first to say Project EKur was canceled.
The source is back with a new YouTube video called ‘Why The Halo Multiplayer Game “Project Ekur” Was Canceled!’ and it goes into detail on what allegedly happened at Halo Studios:
“I’m told Pierre Hintze chose to act as a creative lead and head of production alongside his actual role of studio head. He became too involved with development while continuously changing directives, which caused development to become a mess and fall way behind schedule.
This includes canceling the Slipspace engine battle royale game codenamed ‘Project Tatanka,’ rebranding it into an Unreal Engine extraction shooter project, which was Ekur, second-guessing himself by turning it back into battle royale game, and then canceling it, just like Tatanka.
Late into Ekur’s development, Pierre finally decided to have market research done on the Halo franchise. The result confirmed that most Halo fans did not want a battle royale, they only wanted a full classic Halo game.”
Problems with Campaign Evolved’s development caused Hintze to move most devs to the remake’s progress, leaving Project Ekur understaffed, and the project was eventually shut down for good.

If it’s not Ekur, then other new Halo content is possible, thanks to the ending of Campaign Evolved.
