Grand Theft Auto 6 Physical Editions Expire After 170 Days in Japan

New details of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 release have been shared, and there’s a major caveat for gamers in Japan who purchase the physical edition of the title.

Rockstar‘s latest entry in the beloved franchise is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, and GTA 6 is arguably the most anticipated game of all time.

Pre-orders for the title are now open, and following the reveal of details regarding codes, including that PS5 codes are region-locked, it’s now been confirmed that players in Japan face a time limit to reveal codes.

Japanese GTA 6 Players Have 170 Days to Redeem Code

Spotted by Genki_JPN, via IGN, players in Japan who purchase a physical edition of GTA 6 will have 170 days to redeem the code inside before they expire due to regional regulations.

GTA 6’s physical edition won’t come with an actual disc, which is a rising trend for games, and instead provides a code to redeem for the game. While this won’t expire in the majority of the world, it’s a different story in Japan.

It leads to some areas of confusion, however, as it raises questions about what happens if you purchase a physical edition after release, and when that code would expire.

This would likely be the same date, unless stock is refreshed, but another option is that there isn’t another wave of physical editions in Japan after the initial release.

The reasons for the approach are due to Japan’s strict laws, which aim to protect consumers from getting scammed and require sellers of digital codes to pay the Japanese government a large amount of money in case their companies go under or disappear from the market.

Though that’s extremely unlikely to happen in the case of Rockstar, exceptions can’t be made, so anyone in Japan who purchases a physical edition needs to act quickly.
