Cut Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies Mode Discovered Through PS4 Port

A cut Zombies mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops has been discovered by fans over 15 years after the title was initially released, following the recent release of the PlayStation 4 port.

The original Black Ops and its sequel have been thrust back into the limelight with ports for the titles released, which have revealed some previously unknown content that was seemingly cut from the title.

Cut Black Ops Zombies Mode Uncovered

YouTuber JTAG, via IGN, uncovered a tower-defence-like Zombies mode in the game and uploaded gameplay to his channel, showcasing the clearly unfinished mode.

The details show a bird’s-eye view of the action, similar to tower defence games like Bloons, but would have also enabled players to control a character directly and shoot enemies in the traditional Zombies approach.

The game mode is clearly unfinished, but shows a different avenue that Black Ops could have gone down, and may have been planned as an initial concept before developers settled on the popular Dead Ops Arcade mode.

While it’s highly unlikely that the scrapped mode will ever return, especially as it had gone undiscovered for so long, it shows the sort of experiments Treyarch was doing to expand the Zombies mode.

Zombies originally featured in Call of Duty: World at War and has returned on many occasions since then, including in recent titles which have offered both round-based action and more open-world environments with the likes of MWZ in the Modern Warfare titles.

The mode will not be returning in this year’s Modern Warfare 4, however, with Infinity Ward instead bringing back DMZ as the main spin-off mode from the single-player campaign and multiplayer versus.

While DMZ has been tweaked before to offer Zombies content with the aforementioned MWZ, it appears this year will be more grounded, with players going head-to-head with human enemies.
