Ghost of Yotei Developers Reveal Why a Female Protagonist Was Chosen

In a recent interview, Ghost of Yotei developers elaborated on why a female protagonist was the correct choice for the upcoming sequel.

Atsu is Perfect for Ghost of Yotei’s Underdog Story, Devs Say

Jason Connell and Nate Fox, co-creative directors of Ghost of Yotei, recently spoke at length about the game during an interview with Variety. One of the questions asked of the duo was related to the accusations of the game being ‘woke’ and why they decided that a female protagonist would fit well in Ghost of Yotei’s story.

Connell answered, stating that they wish to carry all the fans of the previous game “forward into an exciting new adventure” and that they are “creatives” who like to “make exciting, new pieces of art and move people in new ways.” The developers aimed to create a sequel that felt fresh yet familiar. Connell and Fox are “enamoured with making origin stories” and focused on one where they could feel “like a bit of an underdog” in the sequel.

Connell adds that Ghost of Yotei’s landscape is “pretty dangerous,” which is why a female protagonist is “an excellent person” for that position. Not many people would expect this character to be “so powerful,” yet “she is on this romp of a vengeance quest.”

Moreover, as players progress in the game, the Ghost of Yotei’s female protagonist will be named The Onryō, which means “an unkillable, vengeance-seeking ghost” in Japanese Folklore. Connell concluded that “Onryō are typically stories of vengeance from females,” which is why Atsu was the perfect fit.
