During the Tokyo Game Show, I was able to go hands-on with Fareidolia, an all-new bishoujo game with an immersive story and a distinctive array of characters. In recent months, you might have heard of this title under the codename ‘Project RX’, which is how Nexon had classified it before unveiling the true name, Fareidolia, just weeks ago.
Fareidolia doesn’t have a release date, but the demo that was available at the Tokyo Game Show offered a neat glimpse at what’s to come. I was so curious about the game that I stood in line for over an hour, and fortunately, what I experienced has me genuinely excited.
Fareidolia Fuses Sweet Characters with Dynamic Combat
Several weeks ago, Nexon unveiled the four characters at the heart of Fareidolia, known as Mates. They’re super unique, and as you explore the game, you’ll come to learn that they each have their own personality, abilities, and fighting mechanics.
The game has been pieced together by RX Studio, the team previously known for Blue Archive. It’s an Unreal Engine 5-driven title that offers an impressive split between ‘life-simulation’ content and dynamic, mind-bending combat sequences.
The demo that I played saw me explore a twisting, warped library, or some kind of old-fashioned mansion, fighting ghostly entities as I went. Towards the end of the demo, I fought mirrored replications of the characters I controlled, effectively trying to fight fire with fire.

It was pretty good! The combat features a unique real-time and turn-based combination that sees enemies and your Mates move around the arena, offering you a cool perspective on every fight. You can use direct attacks, target groups, or use other abilities and skills to buff or heal your friends, and the visuals on display are slick and eye-catching.
I’ll be super transparent. The demo I played was entirely in Japanese, so I don’t have much context to share, as I didn’t understand any of the dialogue, but from what I gathered, there’s a nice amount of humor and an entertaining narrative driving the game.
At the Tokyo Game Show, Nexon and RX Studio had prepared an interactive display that saw me calling out a member of the team – Shami – and playing rock, paper, scissors. I didn’t win, but it was an interesting way to get to know the characters.
Nexon has detailed the characters that make up the roster:
- Minie – An explorer whose life revolves around ‘the greatest adventure’.
- Ohana – A self-proclaimed genius all-rounder.
- Shami – A cat-eared girl who is always short on cash.
They occupy the Twilight Mansion, exploring their special powers and evolving alongside one another. Admittedly, that’s as much as I can tell you about Fareidolia, but I can certainly attest to how good the game looks and how engaging combat feels.
