In keeping with Valor Mortis’ lack of waypoints, sometimes you have to figure things out for yourself in the game. This can happen once you’ve done all there is to do from a narrative standpoint in Fallen Village.
You’ve made it to the end of Fallen Village, The Iron Marshall has fallen, you’ve acquired the grapple ability, and Louis is safe and sound. It’s time for the next stage of your Valor Mortis expedition…but where exactly, I hear you ask.

The Caverns is your next destination in Valor Mortis once you conquer Fallen Village.

Unfortunately, as you may discover, the door to the area is locked and requires a key. The good news is that you can acquire the key right now, and you’ll be kicking yourself once I tell you the solution. It’s a mistake you won’t make again moving forward on subsequent returns to the Abandoned Church after beating bosses.
How to Get Cave Grotto Key in Valor Mortis
You get the Cave Grotto Key by speaking to James in the Abandoned Church, after bringing back Louis from the Fallen Village.
I write this guide knowing I also didn’t know where to go or what to do next. I also rushed to use the new grapple feature to cross the canyon near the church. I quickly realised the doors were locked, and I then thought that Fortress would now be accessible, which is absolutely not the case—you can learn more about how to access Fortress in our guide.

When you get back to the Abandoned Church after the village, the first thing you need to do is go and speak with James in the same location, working next to the weapon upgrade bench.
He’ll serve as a sort of debrief; you plan out your next steps, and he just so happens to have the Cave Grotto Key you need to enter the Caverns. Once your conversation has wrapped up, use the grapple point and head to the locked door on the left to use the key and set you on your merry way!
