There’s no denying that 2024 has been a – mostly – great year for video games. Incredible games like Balatro, Helldivers 2, Astro Bot, Metaphor: Refantazio and others all released to give players hours of fun. But while there was plenty of good, there was also a lot of bad. In 2024, there were nearly 15,000 known jobs lost in the games industry with the real number based on unannounced numbers and layoffs being well over 16,000.
Studios big and small suffered losses of either just a few people or entire teams. And while the layoffs spanned over 160 companies, some suffered more than others. Let’s take a look back at the year that was to remind us of the fact that this industry still has a ways to go with how people are treated. The number of estimated or known people let go during each layoff is listed next to the company.
