Dying Light: The Beast is Finished, and Players Expect Too Much: Techland CEO’s AMA Goes South

Last year, Techland dropped Dying Light: The Beast as a standalone, full release. It was always supposed to be an expansion for Dying Light 2: Stay Human, but the scope and scale of the thing quickly grew beyond those confines. What was ultimately released in September 2025 was so remarkable that it earned perfect marks in our full review.

However, as the game’s first anniversary celebrations wrapped up, Techland’s founder and CEO jumped into an AMA on Discord, confirming a few things about the wider Dying Light universe. He said that, from now on, nothing new is planned for Dying Light: The Beast.

‘… Hasn’t Worked As Well For Us As We Hoped.’

In a recent AMA that went somewhat awry, Techland’s founder and CEO, PaweÅ‚ Marchewka, set straight some of the most critical Dying Light fans in the official Discord server.

Early in the AMA, a question was asked concerning the roadmap for Dying Light: The Beast, the smaller but still standalone game that was released by Techland in September 2025. Recently, Techland rolled out the massive Restored Land update and embarked on a first-anniversary spectacle that introduced new events, weapons, and ways to enjoy the game.

Fans demanded to know if anything new can be expected, but we’ve reached the end of the road with The Beast:

Dying Light: The Beast is a complete game, and that’s how players should approach it – much like Dying Light 1 is today. We’re not planning substantial new content for it.

Marchewka stressed:

Dying Light: The Beast was planned as a complete, self-contained game from the start. We didn’t make a long-term support commitment, but we still added content after release, including the free Restored Land mode.

The five-year support model hasn’t worked as well for us as we hoped. We’re an AAA studio. With each new game, we want to deliver an unforgettable experience and push the boundaries of what games can do.

In something of a snap at players, Marchewka explained how long-term support of games can seriously harm the operational stability of studios, and then suggested that the average gamer expects too much from developers and isn’t willing to part ways with cash to get it:

Supporting existing games for years with smaller teams can seriously disrupt work on new projects. At the same time, players expect frequent, substantial, high-quality updates – sometimes several times a month, and usually for free. With limited resources, we can end up disrupting production and still disappointing players.

Marchewka wanted to make a few things abundantly clear:

  • Dying Light 2 support never ended; it was just refocused to shed more light on a UGC push
  • The team has been ‘working continuously’ on Dying Light 2: Stay Human since launch, and it has a ‘significantly larger’ team working on it than Dying Light (2015) did by this point
  • Dying Light 2 won’t stop being supported when the game’s fifth anniversary arrives in February, but the team ‘hasn’t decided the scale of support’ for that point
  • Dying Light 2’s prologue (feat. Spike) was scrapped because a quarter of players ignored it, and it didn’t gel with the vibe of the full game. The team is not committed to bringing it back

The comments in the Discord AMA couldn’t be responded to traditionally, leaving users to underline each answer with strings of emojis. The answer related to the end of Dying Light: The Beast was met with scores of ‘LRIP’, skulls, sad faces, wilted roses, crying emojis, and thumbs down, a theme that persisted at multiple points during the AMA.
