Dying Light 2: Stay Human wasn’t exactly the most successful smash hit when it dropped in 2022. It received a lukewarm reception on account of many changes from the first game, released in 2015, that changed the face of open-world zombie survival games. In the face of that response, Techland knuckled down and tried to fix up the game over the years that followed.
Now, Dying Light 2 is substantially improved, bursting with content, has spawned a spin-off title, and is the bedrock for a UGC initiative that promises to keep the game going for years. But now, we’ve got a new gameplay trailer for Dying Light 2: Renaissance, and it promises to restore much of what should have been in the game when it was released four years ago.
Dying Light 2: Renaissance Gameplay Trailer Showcases Immense Changes
The team at BGA Game Studios is working on Dying Light 2: Renaissance and Dying Light 2: The Outcast, two supersized mod projects aimed at revitalizing the open-world, live-service zombie survival game in two major ways.
Renaissance wants to ‘restore and reimagine elements of the original vision’ for the game, which includes bringing back to life the long-lost region of Elyseum. The Outcast, on the other hand, is all about introducing a new story, maps, locations, mechanics, and more, but again, a lot of it is tied to what was lost when Dying Light 2 hit the market in 2022.
Years ago, a massive document surfaced detailing hundreds of pages of cut and lost content, which is where much of this comes from.
BGA Game Studios recently posted a new, all-action gameplay trailer for Renaissance, showcasing the mean streets of their fan-made expansion and uncovering some of the core elements of the ambitious mod project:
It’s a remarkable effort, and it has been in the works for months. The feedback has already been extremely positive, with fans taking to the comments to gush over the trailer.
One fan wrote, ‘Watch this community making more players than Techland has ever had,’ while another said, ‘I can’t wait to see this, the real DL2 we deserve… E3 fans for life, I can’t wait to move into Elyseum.”
For those not in the know, Elyseum was a district revealed by Techland in early promotional material that was ultimately slashed from the final game. It was Parisian in nature and represented a more upmarket part of the game world, containing a dense sprawl that lent itself perfectly to the game’s intense parkour mechanics.
This region would have featured scores of quests, and there was a lot of lore tied to the area, but it was ultimately sacrificed by Techland for whatever reason. Over the years, fans held out hope that it would be added via some kind of expansion, but it never emerged.
