The first trailer for the animated Golden Axe series, the latest production from the Paramount-Sega partnership, has arrived. It leans heavily into the show’s comedic tone. The show is slated to premiere on Paramount Plus on September 16.

In an homage to SEGA’s iconic 1989 video game, Golden Axe follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, who just won’t seem to stay dead. Their quest is complicated by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism far exceeds his abilities. Forced to work together despite their flaws, they must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all.

Sega Universe Could Bring More Classics to Animation
News of this series first emerged in 2024. It was originally slated for the Comedy Central cable network and is now being moved to the streaming home of all Paramount IP. In April of this year, Sega launched the Sega Universe brand to help market new releases built on the legacy of classic Sega properties.
In its Q3 FY2025 earnings report, Sega said several classic games will receive animated releases. Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Eternal Champions, and OutRun were all listed with TBD titles in the animated section. The report does not specify which of these releases will be adapted into a TV series and which will be made into films.
