The Subnautica franchise is renowned for its superb survival and horror gameplay, as you delve deeper and deeper into an expansive ocean. One thing that many agreed would have improved the original experience was the addition of multiplayer, and the developers are definitely listening!
Subnautica 2 is the first in the franchise to offer multiplayer, and now, they want it to be taken one step further, with proximity chat. It’s universally agreed that prox chat can make any multiplayer experience better, and with the cosmic horrors of the depths below, it could prove to be an excellent addition—but is it being included in early access?
Is Proximity Chat In Subnautica 2 Early Access?
At release, proximity chat will not be available in Subnautica 2 early access, meaning you’ll have to speak to your friends outside of the game.
It’s a shame, as it would only elevate the multiplayer experience; imagine your friends’ voices fading into the deep, dark depths, only to not hear from them again? Truly horrifying—and hilarious—stuff, but for now, it will have to remain a fantasy.

That being said, Subnautica 2 is in early access, meaning the developers will constantly be adding new and improved features to the game. If there’s such a demand for proximity chat, could the feature be added in the future?
Will Proximity Chat Be Added To Subnautica 2 Early Access
The inclusion of proximity chat is on the developer’s radar, but it’s unknown for certain if and when it will be added.
In an interview with Game Rant, Scott MacDonald, Subnautica 2’s Creative Media Producer, mentioned that one of the biggest demands from the community is proximity chat:
“Currently, the biggest one that we’re seeing is proximity chat as the big thing that people have been asking for. Whether or not that actually works out, I don’t know. But the volume level is high on that particular feature right now.

It encourages hope that the feature would be implemented in the future if the team are already acknowledging the demand, but as MacDonald said, it’s still in contention whether it works well or not. Considering the game is in early access, what better time to test the feature than now, right?
Fingers crossed it’s added in an early update, but Unknown Worlds will be focusing on hot fixes first, and feature requests second, so it could still be some time until we see prox chat in Subnautica 2 early access.
