Recently, another controversy surrounding TheBurntPeanut, an at-times scandalous streamer with a penchant for causing trouble, surfaced, this time tied to Dead by Daylight. It culminated in widespread social media backlash after Behaviour Interactive collaborated with TheBurntPeanut, despite past use of slurs and ‘other offensive language’ being lobbied by opposers and fans of the game.
During his Dead by Daylight stream, TheBurntPeanut saw the inflammation and suggested he’d take the heat after Behaviour Interactive awarded him in-game content to support the collaboration. But that prompted a Behaviour employee to comment publicly in the stream’s chat, via the game’s official account, that they could ‘take the heat’ and that the awarded content was ‘his to keep’.
TheBurntPeanut Lands in Hot Water Again
This is far from the first time that TheBurntPeanut has found himself at the centre of a streaming scandal, and it won’t be the last. Most of this stems from the single use of a slur many months ago, which was captured and apologized for immediately after being uttered, but his generally inflammatory sense has never allowed critics to stop chasing after him.
In a lengthy statement posted on social media, Behaviour Interactive, the developer behind Dead by Daylight, addressed the most recent scandal concerning the ‘pea-tuber’.
This weekend, a Dead by Daylight team member awarded in-game content and currency to a creator streaming our game. Although it is not unusual to unlock content to give creators discovering DbD a chance to have a sneak peek at available content, this decision was made without receiving appropriate approvals. Furthermore, the team member’s subsequent comments and conduct do not align with Dead by Daylight’s core values.
When concerns about this decision became apparent during the stream, we should have responded by looking into these concerns, not dismissing them.
Unfortunately, we’ve now seen the fallout of this decision unfolding in many conversations across the DbD community. We appreciate and stand with our community’s willingness to ensure our shared values are being upheld, at all times, regardless of popularity, and we’re heartbroken at the inflammatory language now being directed towards our community.
At the same time, threatening employees will never be acceptable, and we’re asking everyone to stop engaging with these posts.
We apologize to our community for letting you down. We have already begun reviewing our internal processes to prevent an incident like this from happening again.
Users were quick to bring up the emptiness of the apology and pasted images from TheBurntPeanut’s Twitch stream:
Unfortunately, the post only served to ignite the community. In the comments, plenty of voices were heard, both in favour of TheBurntPeanut and those vehemently against him.
One user wrote, ‘You’re really issuing an apology for having the biggest video game streamer on Earth play your video game?’ Another said, ‘Stop catering to the extremely small minority of overly sensitive they/thems.’
Things quickly turned political.
‘Pathetic nothing-burger response. Y’all deserve nothing.’
Many of the comments were aimed at ‘Mandy’, a Behaviour Interactive community manager and the employee responsible for TheBurntPeanut getting the additional content. It was claimed by some that they did this without authorization, but that’s mostly conjecture.
