It has been claimed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ platform, the ‘action extraction shooter’ mode, is getting a bolstered PvP offering during the game’s first season, which starts in the first week of November. It was suggested that a new small-area map called XO1 will be added to DMZ, mirroring the addition of Building 21 in the DMZ beta released in 2022.
On social media, it was claimed that the XO1 environment will be ‘PvP-focused’ and ‘chaotic’, but while it makes sense that it would be added, there’s nothing yet to indicate if it’s actually coming.
Is DMZ Getting a PvP Map?
Building 21 launched in December 2022 as a limited-time, limited-access location that required players to secure an access card before they could get into it. For a while, it was only open on weekends, presenting a restricted opportunity for players to secure some high-tier loot.
It was also a haven for PvP, given that it was a small, tight map with nowhere to hide. Think of Warzone’s Rebirth Island map, and you’re basically there.
XO1, the rumored map coming to Modern Warfare 4’s version of DMZ, reads like the same thing.
The end cutscene for DMZ’s story missions reveals an expansion into territories beyond Hajin, which sets the stage nicely for whatever comes next. It’s not outside the realms of possibility to suggest that Infinity Ward plans to introduce small, instanced locations like XO1 or Building 21, as this allows for a different type of gameplay to surface.
The problem is, the PvE community is up in arms. Recently, a petition was started to introduce a PvE-only mode to DMZ, removing all traces of PvP combat from those who don’t want to experience it. It’s no big secret that the PvPvE platform is rife with the more hardcore players hunting those just trying to enjoy the world, and that’s a huge problem for many.
It was the number one sticking point I called out in my review of DMZ, in fact.
