Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser says Red Dead Redemption and Bully almost never happened, explaining how strong teams and a solid build can save struggling games.
Of course, Rockstar is on everyone’s mind in gaming as Grand Theft Auto 6, the most anticipated game of its generation and a release being hailed as a genuine cultural touchstone, is just one month away. However, Rockstar is known for more than GTA. Games like Red Dead Redemption and Bully are also pillars of the company’s portfolio over the years.
Red Dead Redemption and Bully Nearly Didn’t Happen

In a recent interview with IGN, Dan Houser noted that Red Dead Redemption almost never happened. He said the same about Bully, but added that some games can survive turbulent development cycles if the key people involved stay focused on their vision.
“I think there were lots of moments where Red Dead nearly didn’t happen. I think there were lots of moments when Bully nearly didn’t happen, and lots of other moments when games that didn’t happen could have,” Houser says (via GamesRadar+). “There are lots of happenstance moments, or one good build, or the game suddenly comes together, that save projects that are struggling.”
It’s been 13 years since Grand Theft Auto 5’s release, making this undoubtedly the longest gap between GTA releases. Grand Theft Auto 5 has been playable across three console generations. GTA 6 has already seen numerous delays, but on November 19, all questions will be answered as players begin writing GTA 6’s legacy.
It was recently confirmed that GTA will be eligible for nomination at this year’s Game Awards. The game is expected to receive multiple nominations and potentially take home many awards.
