Modern Warfare 4 Emerges to Best Call of Duty Steam Rating in a Decade

Modern Warfare 4’s campaign early access portion went live yesterday, and fans everywhere have poured in to get a glimpse of this year’s hotly anticipated Call of Duty title. The marketing loop has built up immeasurable hype for this year’s instalment of the first-person shooter series, and folks are eagerly awaiting the arrival of multiplayer, DMZ, and the esports action to commence.

On Steam, Modern Warfare 4’s earliest impressions have pushed the franchise into a realm it hasn’t seen for many years. It’s very early days, but the review sentiment has, at the time of writing, made Modern Warfare 4 the top-rated Call of Duty game, on Steam, in over a decade.

Modern Warfare 4 Impresses Users on PC

We have limited numbers to play with, but as I publish this article, Modern Warfare 4 has managed to rack up a positive review rating of 81.15% on Steam. That makes it the best-rated Call of Duty game since 2015’s Black Ops III.

Here’s the spread of ratings for the last eleven Call of Duty games on Steam (note: MW4’s rating, especially, will change drastically in the coming days and weeks):

  • Modern Warfare 4 – 81.15%
  • Black Ops 7 – 38.71%
  • Black Ops 6 – 45.75%
  • Modern Warfare III – 48.19%
  • Modern Warfare II – 47.10%
  • Vanguard – 65.94%
  • Cold War – 77.95%
  • Modern Warfare – 77.86%
  • WWII – 69.72%
  • Infinite Warfare – 61.28%
  • Black Ops III – 84.36%

What’s more interesting in that list is that Black Ops Cold War, the ‘rushed’ title that everyone seemed to hate, ranks higher than Modern Warfare 2019, the ‘turning point’ game that refreshed the franchise, introduced Warzone, and rebooted the MW sub-series.

I will stress again that the review score will have likely changed by the time you see this article, but it’s indicative of the bigger picture; that’s for sure. And I’ll also stress that the review scores are coming from the earliest adopters, those who wanted to pay extra or early to get the first look at the game’s campaign, a week ahead of the global launch.

They’re the players who are more primed to enjoy Modern Warfare 4.

You’ve also got a tiny pool to work with, with the game having secured only 900 user reviews at the time of writing.

The expectations were high, the technological leaps look to have pushed Modern Warfare 4 to dizzying new heights, and folks seem to be loving it. At least, they’re loving the campaign. The multiplayer portion of the game is another thing entirely.
