With just under three weeks until the game’s launch, EA Sports has released a full deep dive look at gameplay in College Football 26. The deep dive came in the form of both a new trailer that you can watch below as well as a full blog going over all of the changes coming to the follow up of one of 2024’s most-successful games.
More details on College Football 26’s modes like Dynasty and Road to Glory are expected to come over the next couple weeks as launch approaches. College Football 26 releases on July 7—for Deluxe Edition Owners—for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Those who want just the base version can start playing on July 10.
College Football 26 Gameplay Features
College Football 26’s gameplay features a number of updates to the game’s playbooks, Wear & Tear system, tackling updates, abilities, control updates, and more.
One of the big new additions with College Football 26’s gameplay comes in the form of play calling. EA Sports has added more than 2,800 new plays and over 45 new formations to the game for players to expand their attack on both offense and defense in even more ways than before.
“New option types, new motion types, [and] bizarre plays and formations from last season are at your fingertips, and they’re all tuned so you can craft a strategy that feels like your favorite program,” EA says.

Aside from the playbook, College Football 26 features adjustments to blocking and defensive coverages along with dynamic play-calling and substitutions to give you more control over the minute-to-minute action on the field. There’s even new player abilities and player types to make the stars on the field stand out even more.
In total, there are 10 new player archetypes and 84 rebalanced abilities have been included to “showcase the wide variety of skillsets” seen in College Football. There’s even a new tier of abilities called Heisman Tier that are upgraded from Platinum Tier. These new abilities are more powerful abilities that helps players take over the action on the field.
Even More Gameplay Changes Are Coming
As mentioned earlier, the game’s Wear & Tear system that debuted last year has been updated to give players more control while cleaning up various bugs. To give you that control, Wear & Tear now has fully customizable auto-subs and sliders.
When it comes to tackling, EA has updated the system to bring, what it says is, more realism and satisfaction to “every hit”.
“Now, tacklers with better ratings won’t just win more often—they’ll win more distinctively,” EA says. “We’ve layered in timing-based elements that allow stronger defenders to finish plays with authority while making weaker tacklers more vulnerable to being dragged or broken through.”
There are also new tackle types, including:
- Wrap Catch Tackles
- In-Range Lunge
- Unprepped Hit Sticks
