Bungie canceled a game back in 2024, codenamed ‘Payback’, which was meant to be the ‘Future of Destiny’.
Talking about the future of Destiny, Bungie recently announced a shift in the company’s focus toward preserving the game’s legacy. This change will begin with the restoration of content that has been vaulted over the years. However, the canceled game we are discussing today would have served more as an extension of the Destiny universe.
Canceled Bungie Title, ‘Payback’, Was a More Hero-Focused Title, Sort of Similar to Genshin Impact
In a new YouTube video, Jason Schreier discussed a game that Bungie canceled in the summer of 2024, codenamed Payback, which was supposed to be the ‘future of Destiny’, but it wasn’t a traditional title. Bungie’s Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy ran the game, and it was canceled after the Final Shape expansion launched.
Payback was poised to be the future of Destiny until it was canceled, but the developers weren’t sure about calling it Destiny 3. It wasn’t a traditional Destiny title, bringing a more hero-focused approach. Schreier reveals that the game could be compared to Genshin Impact, not in terms of monetization, but because players can play as one of the heroes from the Destiny universe.

The canceled Bungie title was aimed at younger, newer audiences who weren’t deep in Destiny lore. Schrier also revealed that Destiny’s demographic kept aging with the game because it couldn’t bring in newer players.
