Ubisoft Cancels Press Previews of Assassin’s Creed Shadows

UPDATE: It’s official, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been delayed until February 2025.

ORGINAL: Earlier today, Ubisoft canceled its online appearance at the Tokyo Game Show due to “various circumstances”; however, Insider Gaming has learned that Ubisoft has also canceled its press previews of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

According to various sources, the Assassin’s Creed Shadows press previews were scheduled to take place next week, and the embargo date for the previews would be announced then.

At the time of writing, the game is still scheduled to release on November 12, 2024, however, the recent announcements may suggest that the game might be delayed.

Insider Gaming reached out to Ubisoft for comment but, as of yet, has yet to reply on the cancellation of the previews, but did not offer comment on the cancellation of the Tokyo Game Show. Earlier today, Ubisoft announced in a statement about Tokyo Game Show:

“We regret to inform you that due to various circumstances, we have decided to cancel our online participation in Tokyo Game Show 2024 which was scheduled to start at 3:00 PM on September 26th,” the statement reads.

“We apologize for the short notice. We sincerely apologize to everyone who was looking forward to the broadcast.”

The company said that the “currently ongoing giveaway campaign” would continue despite the fact that the broadcast was no longer happening.

I hope they don't plan to postpone the game to "reimagine" it?

I wonder if this is because of the lukewarm reception outlaws received?

I hope they don't plan to postpone the game to "reimagine" it?

I imagine the game is too far along to be reimagined.

Likely a big nothing. Some recent bad press which would undoubtedly take away from any TGS presentation planned (Japanese focused event after all!)

While this sounds like a delay I can't think Ubisoft is able to afford it. They need a big success (sales-wise).

Gee, wonder why this racist game, that is super disrespectful to the Japanese, was pulled from the Tokyo show? Can't hide it forever ubislop! The Japanese youtubers I watch, have already pulled apart the miserable trailer, something egregious every 2 seconds! Crazy!

Surely this is just some fluke. You don't spending millions on developing a new game just to not show it off to your audience before release.

Just how is this game "super disrespectful" to the Japanese?

The majority of the blowback began with a complaint to the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology by Senator Hamata Satoshi of the far right Party to Protect the People from NHK. This is the same racist right winger who accused historian Dr. Thomas Lockley of writing "fake history" in his extremely well researched book on Yasuke. There is *zero* doubt Yasuke was a samurai who served Oda Nabunaga. Satoshi doesn't like that fact.

Furthermore, just how are the inaccuracies that have been identified any different than Valhalla's wooden churches from 12th century Norway appearing in 9th century Britain? It's a video game, and there will be minor inaccuracies. Response to the game in Japan has actually been positive. Video game consultant Kazuma Hashimoto stated many of the negative social media comments written in Japanese were clearly written by westerners and then "roughly" translated.
