Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced developers have revealed new combat details, introducing new adaptive enemies, the core combat loop, advanced attacks, and more.
The highly anticipated remake, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, is set to release in a couple of months, and fans are curious about the improvements and changes the developers have made to the game. Last, we were informed that the ‘Hidden Blade’ will not be a selectable weapon. Now they have provided in-depth information about combat.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Combat Features Revealed
A new post on the Assassin’s Creed blog provides players with combat details for Black Flag, resynced from Paul Fu, the Creative Director. Fu explained that the game’s core combat loop revolves around takedowns, bringing enemies to a state where you can end them with a finisher. There are multiple types of takedowns, which players can learn more about below:
Takedowns
- Hidden Blade Takedown: Breaking an enemy’s defense with multiple attacks will trigger a Hidden Blade takedown
- Perfect Parry Takedowns: Triggered by timing a Perfect Parry, Edward can chain his takedowns to up to four nearby enemies, depending on the sword he carries.
- Wall Takedown: Kick an enemy into a wall to initiate a fatal takedown.
- Ground Takedown: Grounded enemies (from an explosion or Sweep move) can be killed by a Ground Takedown
The Hidden Blade will bring more visual variations to takedowns once unlocked in the story, along with different animation variations like Chain Takedowns.
Using the Environment
The environment is a big part of combat in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, bringing fatal kicks into play from ledges, corridors being the spot for chain takedowns, exploding powder kegs, and wall-takedowns through well-placed kicks.
New Dodge Attack and Other Advanced Attacks of Black Flag Resynced
The developers have informed players that Black Flag Resynced’s combat will introduce a new dodge attack that can deal additional damage when timed right, turning it into a perfect dodge. The heavy attack is also new and can be performed by holding down the attack button. Heavy attacks differ according to the weapon you are using:
Rapier: Heavy Strikes are more damaging and can pierce through foes.
Cutlass: Heavy Strikers cover a wide area, hitting multiple enemies.
Pistol-Sword: Two damaging shots are fired, allowing Edward to focus fire on one enemy or spread the damage on two.
Black Flag Resynced Introduces Adaptive Enemies
Another new introduction to combat in Black Flag Resynced is adaptive enemies, who can “react to repetitive behavior”, making players change their approach from time to time. Paul Fu explained:
“For example, wait around too much for a Parry, and enemies will react by performing Unstoppable Attacks that cannot be parried. Abuse a Kick too much, and enemies will quickly dodge them. The trick is to alternate between offense and defense. Varying your combos helps. Rotate between Kicks, Sweeps, Rope Darts, Pistols and Heavy Strikes at the end of your attack combos to confuse enemies.”
Advanced Enemy Archetypes
Last but not least, introducing advanced enemy archetypes will require Edward to adopt different strategies to face them. Players will find archetypes like Brute, Captain, and Demolitionist, who can deny takedowns, have heavy defense, perform unblockable attacks, and more.
Players will have to use different tools and attacks from Edward’s arsenal to face these enemies, including the Rope Dart, a Sweeping move, a pistol shot, using the Gun Kata, and more.
