All Days Gone Remastered New Modes Explained—Horde Assault, Permadeath & Speedrun

Days Gone Remastered is all set to release on April 25, 2025, and Bend Studio is turning up with many more additions than just graphics and performance enhancements for the remastered title. In this guide, we will learn more about the additional Days Gone Remastered game modes, which include Horde Assault, Permadeath and Speedrun.

What is Days Gone Remastered’s Horde Assault Mode?

The Horde Assault Mode for Days Gone Remastered has been described as the new ‘survival arcade mode’ and “a fresh, unique take on the core Days Gone gameplay loop”. The aim of this mode is simple: to achieve the highest score by surviving as long as possible. However, the horde sizes you face keep on increasing, with varying enemies such as Breakers, Reachers, and Rager bears heading your way.

New Flamethrower Weapon for Days Gone Remastered

Players start with just a sidearm weapon and will build their arsenal as they explore the open regions. A bunch of supply boxes are spread across the map, providing players with over 20 weapons. However, the drops will be random for each run. One of these is a new weapon, the flamethrower, which is unavailable in the story mode. Players must find the Drifter bike to reach these locations across the map.

Increased Horde Sizes

Kevin McAllister, Creative and Product Lead at Bend Studio, has stated that the new Days Gone Remastered game mode will introduce much larger horde sizes. McAllister explained that the biggest horde in the story mode featured 500 Freakers, and in Horde Assault mode, players will find hordes that will “range up to 800 Freakers”.

Modifiers and Rewards

In Days Gone Remastered’s Horde Assault Mode, players will progress through a Reward path, which includes new Injectors, character skins and patch cosmetics. There are 24 unique Injectors; 12 are positive, and the remaining 12 are negative.

For example, Exploding Freakers is a modifier that makes Freakers blow up when they die, helping players control crowds. On the other hand, Wanted is a modifier that makes the run more challenging for the players, as it immediately begins the difficulty escalation system.

Players can earn new skins for six never-before-playable characters, O’Brian, Lisa, Skizzo and more, joining the fray. Patches are also making a return to the game. However, this time, they are purely cosmetic additions.

What is Days Gone Remastered’s Permadeath Mode?

Days Gone Remastered’s Permadeath mode is self-explanatory: if you die, your death is permanent; no respawns or save points that start from the beginning. However, the developers have made things a bit easier for the players, adding two different options and difficulty settings for the game mode.

Two Permadeath Modes

Before starting Days Gone Remastered’s Permadeath mode, players can start from any difficulty, with two settings to choose from. The whole game is the classic permadeath mode, where your save file gets deleted when you die, and you have to start the entire game all over again. Per Act is the easier mode, where players will only return to the beginning of the Act they are on when they die.

Tips for Permadeath Mode

McAllister has also provided tips for players who are getting into this game mode. Firstly, players should scavenge resources at every chance and “be more methodical” with their approach. He also highlighted “an early point in the story” where players decide where to store their weapon stash. McAllister has advised players to go with Tucker’s Camp, as it provides quicker access to their weapons and “makes a huge difference in the early game.”

What is Days Gone Remastered’s Speedrun Mode?

In this game mode for Days Gone Remastered, the developers provide the necessary tools you need to record your speedruns. The game mode “is separated from other modes,” players can also choose any difficulty they want. Once you start your run, you will find an always-on-screen timer that pauses during the cinematics. When the run is complete, your time will be recorded next to the difficulty, and you will receive a special graphic with detailed stats.
