EXCLUSIVE: Veteran Studio Working On New Lord of the Rings Game

A veteran studio is working on the new The Lord of the Rings game.

In October 2025, Insider Gaming exclusively reported that a new Lord of the Rings game was in development. This game, according to sources, was being backed by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and was being designed in a way that it could “compete with Hogwarts Legacy”.

At the time of the report, it was understood that multiple parties were involved in the game, including Embracer and Revenge. There was also another studio working on the game, and Insider Gaming has learned which studio that is.

Recently, claims surfaced regarding Kingdom Come: Deliverance developer Warhorse Studios working on a The Lord of the Rings game. While sources say that it’s possible they are also working on one, they aren’t the studio working on this specific game.

According to those close to the game’s development, Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics is working on the upcoming The Lord of the Rings game. This work is alongside what’s being done on the new Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst titles.

When asked for comment on both what Warhorse is working on and the Crystal Dynamics-developed game, Embracer reiterated that it does not comment on rumors or speculation. Crystal Dynamics also declined to comment.

As mentioned, the game being developed by Crystal Dynamics has received funding from the ADIO of roughly $100 million. The game has been in development for some time, but when asked regarding a release timeline, Insider Gaming was told it’s still “a bit away”.

  • I really hope they keep the world and costume design the same as in the Peter Jackson movies. They are just too iconic and just *is* what Middle-earth looks like to most of the public and part of the appeal for many.

However, I also understand that they would need to do some licencing work to be able to do that. Any chance you can comment on that in a comment or in your next article?

  • Like Eidos, Crystal Dynamics suffered massive layoffs I don’t think they can handle another project. Just look back at Perfect Dark they probably could not handle that too, I know it’s Microsoft but still no way they could have had that ready this generation.
