Starfield and ‘Future Bethesda Titles’ Will Use AI-Driven DLSS 5 Technology

NVIDIA has just unveiled DLSS 5, the next-generation rendering technology that seeks to bridge the gap between ‘rendering and reality.’ It has already been labelled the firm’s most significant breakthrough since real-time ray tracing debuted back in 2018, and it uses heavy generative AI to produce photorealistic results that, admittedly, look a little eerie.

In a statement saying nice things about the AI-driven technology, Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd Howard revealed that Starfield and ‘future Bethesda titles’ will use DLSS 5.

Fallout 5 to Have DLSS 5, Then?

In a blog post, NVIDIA sang the praises of itself and of DLSS 5, a revolutionary breakthrough. It has been dubbed the ‘GPT moment for graphics’ by Jensen Huang, the company’s co-founder and CEO. The technology has already been backed by the industry’s biggest developers and publishers, including Bethesda Game Studios.

Speaking in a statement captured on the blog post, Todd Howard said:

NVIDIA and Bethesda have a long history of pushing gaming graphics and innovation forward, and DLSS 5 represents the next major step in that journey.

With DLSS 5, the artistic style and detail shine through without being held back by the traditional limits of real-time rendering. We’re excited to work with this new technology and look to bring DLSS 5 to Starfield and future Bethesda titles.

DLSS 4.5 is a relatively young technology that, in NVIDIA’s words, ‘uses AI to draw 23 out of every 24 pixels seen on the screen.’ But DLSS 5 goes beyond that, using AI-centric modelling to render photorealistic visuals that aren’t landing well with every gamer, as you could imagine.

Bethesda’s pledge to use DLSS 5 going forward, which was indicated by a comparison image featuring Starfield’s characters, is logical. It could mean that The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 boast the most sumptuous visuals in their respective franchise history.

Given how long it’s taken to make them, they’ll probably support DLSS 7.5, or something.

  • Anyone upset should not play them or support companies doing this. Problem is they do Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Disney, NetEase, Tencent, Capcom, Sony, X, Ubisoft, EA, Take2, Nvidia and others. Either quit gaming and technology or shut up. I swear they show how unimportant and weightless their moronic opinions are it’s more like children throwing tantrums except sadly instead it’s 40 year olds

    • Personally Im super excited. I really enjoyed Starfield and would love to push my pc a little harder given I’m only gaming at 2k

    • The issue isn’t the technology itself. It’s the lack of lawful ethics and regulations for its processes and use. Until that’s addressed, there are no benefits that can be enjoyed. It’s just like electricity when it was first introduced to the masses, assembly lines, or cars. Any big technology or advancement that had people against it was mostly grounded in a lack of regulations and laws to keep others (and the environment) safe and their rights respected. This is no different.

    • That is my impression based on the nonsense I have seen on Tiktok. Just shut up. You will play these games AND you can choose to not use DLSS 5 if you so want. As of the wooden character models are something that Bethesda hasn’t needed to improve forever. I’m sure these same whiners also complained about that at some point

  • Sure can’t wait for this to be the new shortcut standard like dlas was where we half ass character models because dlss will fill in the blanks

    • Try making a game with graphics that good by yourself, it’s hard, you don’t know how hard it is though until you’ve tried. I make games and it’s a pain in my ass to get all the nitty gritty little details in there, do you want your GTA VI or do you want another delay?

  • I don’t understand the problem. I’ve been a gamer since Games were invented. Since the early 80’s and I still am. Photo realism was always the Dream from the start. We Imagined Games as real as the Star Trek Holo Deck that we live in and real Graphics that physically and mentally you could not decipher reality from Graphics. This Tech was and is just inevitable.

  • Honestly? I’m not surprised BGS supports it. They’re obsessed with taking the path of least resistance and get shocked when things don’t work out. It feels like they really just want ES6 to fail spectacularly and make a name for that.

  • It took 2 5090s to run the demos they’ve shown. I’m not spending 3k on a 5090. I could, and have zero impact on my day to day financials, but I’m not giving these greedy f*cks that out of principle. You can buy blackwell 4000s with 24gb of cream for 1300 right now. Or AMDs AI GPU with 32gb for even less. They 100% have the capacity to make these cards, they just want greater margins. F*CK that. I was very close to buying a 5080 and selling my buddy my 7900xtx, but nah, I won’t feed into it
