G2 Hel Disbanded in Shake-up to Women’s Esports Space

G2 Esports has just announced the dissolution of G2 Hel, the female League of Legends team that was unveiled in September 2022. The team was reportedly disbanded because of ongoing issues with generating ‘enough money’ in the women’s League of Legends scene to sustain an entire roster.

G2 Hel had a fairly strong year in the League of Legends space, and the disbanding of the team comes as a surprise to some. The situation was made worse by G2 Esports not offering a clear explanation as to why the team was scrapped. It also didn’t help that G2 referred to Hel as a ‘project’ in a social post.

Why Was G2 Hel Shut Down?

G2 Esports confirmed that the women’s League of Legends roster was disbanded, but didn’t clear up why the move had to happen. The leading theories are that the ecosystem just doesn’t make enough money compared to the core League of Legends competitive vertical, forcing organizations to make these drastic moves.

In 2022, G2 Hel was unveiled and became one of the strongest and most prolific forces in the women’s competitive landscape. But that alone isn’t enough to stave off closure.

Fans have stressed concerns about the wider progressive state of the esports scene. In November, following a final season, Counter-Strike’s ESL Impact circuit was dissolved because of sustainability issues, a similar situation to the women’s League of Legends space.

Even VALORANT, which has been pioneering with the Game Changers circuit for some time, suffered this year under the weight of criticism and complaints concerning competitive integrity.

The players impacted by the decisive strike branded it ‘the end of an era’, but as long as there is a women’s esports scene in League of Legends, they’ll undoubtedly land a home somewhere.
