The first major Pokémon Champions tournament has concluded, as Arsal Puri won the Indianapolis Regional Masters VGC Championship.
He defeated popular VGC content creator Wolfe ‘Wolfey’ Glick in a clean 2-0 sweep after some phenomenal play.
Wolfey was playing a rather unorthodox team with Mega Steelix and Sharp Beak Talonflame that caused top players a lot of issues throughout the tournament.
But Arsal Puri expertly timed his Mega Evolutions and got some luck with his Charizard living on 1 HP in a pivotal moment — it isn’t competitive Pokémon without some RNG.
Puri’s Pokémon Champions Team
- Charizard
- Item: Charizardite Y
- Moves: Heat Wave – Solar Beam – Weather Ball – Protect
- Sinistcha
- Item: Kasib Berry
- Moves: Matcha Gotcha – Rage Powder – Trick Room – Protect
- Floette (Eternal Flower)
- Item: Floetite
- Moves: Moonblat – Dazzling Gleam – Calm Mind – Protect
- Garchomp
- Item: Choice Scarf
- Moves: Earthquake – Rock Slide – Stomping Tantrum – Dragon Claw
- Incineroar
- Item: Sitrus Berry
- Moves: Fake Out – Flare Blitz – Throat Chop – Parting Shot
- Venusaur
- Focus Sash
- Moves: Sleep Powder – Sludge Bomb – Earth Power – Protect
The team that Puri used to win the tournament won’t come as much of a surpirse to those who have been following the meta.
It has the usual powerhouses of Mega Charizard Y and Mega Floette to deal huge damage and outclass most other Pokémon in Champions.
However, knowing when to Mega Evolve and which one to choose is absolutely crucial to its success.
Plus, the utility of Inceneroar, Sinistcha, and Venusaur with Sleep Powder is what separates it from other meta teams.
Interesting Picks in the Pokémon Champions Indianapolis Top 8

While a very typical meta team won the tournament, the Indianapolis Regional Masters VGC top eight shows that there is room for creativity.
Of course, there was Wolfey’s mad scientist team with Mega Steelix, but there were plenty of other interesting choices.
The top four also featured Hisuian Arcanine and Palafin via Michael Zhang and Nick Navarre, respectively.
While William Brown made it into the top eight with an aggressive weather-setting Politoed and a Baton Passing Espartha.
