Star Wars: Battlefront 2’s resurgence is a thing for gaming historians to study. From around May onwards, the title saw a skyrocketing player count surface out of nowhere, taking the game to previously unseen heights as tens of thousands of users flocked back to the 2017 title.
In recent sales data released by Circana, it was revealed that in May, Battlefront 2 became the 12th best-selling game, leaping up the chart from the 135th position it held in April.
No Mind Tricks
Battlefront 2’s shocking resurgence turned heads worldwide, with many wondering what it was that brought about this monumental return to form of EA’s Star Wars FPS. The numbers speak for themselves, according to Circana’s latest data drop.
Battlefront 2 hit 12th place on the US sales charts in May, beating Red Dead Redemption 2, Helldivers 2, and The Last of Us Part 2 Talk about a trend, right?
It’s almost unprecedented that a game could have this strong a player refresh this long after release. It has been almost a decade since the game dropped, yet in a single month, it managed to climb 123 places up the best-seller chart without any major changes being made to the game.
In May, the game secured its highest player count in years on Steam, and folk started to pay attention. Talk turned to a potential follow-up, with many believing that Star Wars: Battlefront 3 was about to be announced. It was suggested by former developers that an announcement probably isn’t coming anytime soon.
What caused Battlefront 2’s resurgence? Like the growth of Fallout 76 around the release of the live-action adaptation of the series, the sudden success of Battlefront 2 appears to be linked to alternate mediums. The ongoing success of Andor and a celebration of Revenge of the Sith (2005) gave players that Star Wars bug, and Battlefront 2 is just the most recent Star Wars FPS.
It’s simple, really.
