MindsEye Actor ‘Doesn’t Like It’ When Devs Release Unfinished Games

Alex Hernandez, the voice actor behind MindsEye’s protagonist, Jacob Diaz, opened up about the troubled launch and questioned the release of unfinished games.

Game-breaking glitches and performance issues spoiled what was initially a highly anticipated launch for MindsEye. Even though the devs apologized and released hotfixes to right the ship, it wasn’t enough to restore public sentiment. On Metacritic, MindsEye became the worst-rated game in over a year, and Build a Rocket Boy suffered layoffs as a result of the catastrophic game launch.

As for what’s next, the development team has revealed a roadmap to address most of the pressing issues and improve the game to a more playable state. Yet, Hernandez criticized the business model.

‘Beta Testing Without Calling It That’: MindsEye Actor on Flawed Releases

In an interview with Check It TV, Hernandez acknowledged fan frustrations and shared a similar sentiment.

“For whatever reason, a company deciding to release something that has these issues, and then sort of taking care of it post mortem. Obviously, we weren’t the first game to do that; a very notorious example is Cyberpunk,” Hernandez explained. “As a gamer, as a consumer, I don’t love that model. I don’t like that moving forward.”

“From a consumer perspective, and I’m sure a lot of people feel this way, Hernandez continued. “I think it does more long-term harm than good to your reputation to release something that is in a state of less than 100% and then charge 100% of the price.”

Moving forward, Hernandez urged developers to release games in a free beta or charge less than full price to iron out the kinks first.

“I’m not sure what drives companies to essentially carry out beta testing without calling it that. I, as a consumer, would rather be told up front, because then I know what I’m signing up for.”
