The Switch 2 is dominating in Japan, with consumers scooping up the new console left, right, and center. Not only has it passed one million units sold in Japan, but it’s already sold better than certain PS5 units and all Xbox hardware.
Many believed the Switch 2 wasn’t a huge upgrade over the Nintendo Switch. They believed it wouldn’t sell well and pale in comparison to the Switch 1’s legacy. We’re a few weeks removed from the Switch 2 launch, and it’s the fastest-selling console in history.
Switch 2 Has Already Sold 1 Million Units in Japan

According to Nintendo Life, the Switch 2 has recorded 1,101,136 in lifetime sales. It’s still got some way to catch up to the Switch 1’s 20,111,932 lifetime sales, or Lite and OLED versions.
However, this is an impressive start by all metrics. If you look at the data more deeply, we can see the PS5 Digital Edition (presumably the Slim) has accumulated 975,486 in sales, and the Switch 2 has already surpassed it by a good margin.
Xbox fans should look away, as if you take the Xbox Series X’s 320,762 units, the Xbox Series S’ 337,811, and the Xbox Digital Edition’s 20,854, this equals 679,427. Meaning, the Switch 2 has almost single-handedly doubled this generation’s Xbox lifetime Japanese sales in a few weeks!
With Donkey Kong Bananza on the horizon and the likes of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond on the way, who knows how long the Switch 2’s momentum can last?
