In a recent shareholder update, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed, for the first time, that PlayStation 5 players are outpacing PlayStation 4 players. For the last year or so, we’ve been working with data (supplied by SIE) that suggested the split was almost an indiscernible cut between 50-50.
The specifics of the latest data can’t be accurately verified, as Sony has opted to remove figures from a chart published to highlight the player base split. Even with the numbers not being made public, it’s easy to see that PlayStation 5 has now secured a substantial lead over PlayStation 4.
But Sony isn’t done with last-gen just yet.
‘We Remain Committed to Serving Them’
The recent financial presentation saw President and CEO Hideaki Nishino take to the stage to deliver the following feedback on the PlayStation 4’s resilient performance:
The PlayStation 5 offers the best way for players to experience our content, and as such, its player base has continued to grow. These players are highly engaged, spending more on content and services than in prior generations.
However, the PlayStation 4 remains an important access point for existing players to experience our content and services, and we remain committed to serving them.
Nishino also touched on the topic of the PlayStation 6, and while no concrete information was offered, it was stressed that whatever comes next for the PlayStation brand is ‘top of mind’.
