GeoGuessr Steam Edition has quickly become one of the worst-rated games on Steam, just days after its launch.
GeoGuessr Steam Edition Launches to ‘Overwhelmingly Negative’ Reviews
Spotted by 80 Level (via TheGamer), GeoGuessr Steam Edition launched on May 8, 2025, and has amassed thousands of negative reviews. At the time of writing, the title has over 3,000 reviews on Steam, and only 16% are positive. The leading issue players are annoyed about is their monetisation strategy, which features a yearly subscription rather than a one-time payment.
If you head over to Steam250, you will see that GeoGuessr Steam Edition is now the second-worst-rated title on the platform, behind War of the Three Kingdoms and ahead of Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight.
GeoGuessr Steam Edition only allows players unlimited access to the Amateur Division and unranked team duels for free. To access the popular ranked Solo Duels mode, players must purchase either a Steam Pass, Elite Yearly Subscription or the Unlimited Yearly subscription. Which means players will have to shell out $29.99 per year/ $2.50 per month to try out all the other content of the title.
Also, the browser subscription doesn’t provide players access to the paid content for GeoGuessr Steam Edition, and vice versa with the Steam Pass. Only if you have the Elite Yearly or Unlimited Yearly subscriptions will it work both ways. Also, cross-play is available between the browser and Steam versions of the game. Players should note that GeoGuessr is currently in early access on Steam.
