XDefiant Could Soon be Playable Again With Private Server

Ubisoft’s XDefiant will go down as a big miss, as the much-hyped free-to-play shooter was touted as a CoD killer and failed to live up to the almost overblown expectations. Despite Ubisoft shutting down the main game servers, fans are trying to revive the FPS.

June 3, 2025, saw the XDefiant servers shut down, meaning official matchmaking for the game ended. Forever. XDefiant‘s name is still brought up from time to time, with even Mark Rubin discussing the possibility of XDefiant returning. While an official return is off the table, an unofficial capacity is in development.

The XDefiant subreddit is still going, with fans reminiscing about the game’s short-lived period. It was a great shooter that felt punchy, but it lacked content, among one of two other issues in the end.

I still see plenty of people clamoring for XDefiant, though, which is why a small dev team has decided to try and make the shooter playable again.

redcommander on the XDefiant subreddit explained:

‘Hey everyone!

In the past few months we’ve been working on a private server for XDefiant and have decided to finally share a first look at it.

While a lot of development still has to happen we’ve managed to reverse engineer and replicate the multiple network protocols they’ve used in the game.

We invite you all to join our Discord server: https://discord.gg/kFfYfpvRst

That way you can stay up to date as we release new information and progress updates!

Disclaimer: this is a fan project, to stay safe we will not be sharing any copyrighted materials and expect you to have owned XDefiant prior to being able to play. Currently gameplay is not yet possible and we cannot yet give an ETA on when it’ll be.

We hope you can all have fun playing XDefiant again soon!

You can check out the gameplay footage here.

It likely won’t lead to a massive XDefiant revival, as the full game’s live status showed that player numbers were declining and quickly fell behind expectations.

But if you do have that itch, you can track the server’s status, as unless Ubisoft intervenes, you should be able to scratch it at some point.
